This is Me—a poem for NF Awareness Month

This poem comes from contributor Pujitha Kolla, who lives with neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2).

Pujitha on the beach

Truthfully,

What do you see in me?

Oh, please

I don’t need your sympathies.

And don’t make the mistake of

underestimating me.

Maybe,

I don’t seem like much…

Maybe I don’t fit

the picture you painted

of what strength

is supposed to look like.

But I’m not your assumption.

I am my resilience,

I am my bravery,

I am my kindness,

I am my love,

I am my empathy,

I am my leadership

I am whatever I want to be.

And that…

Is me.

If you want to know why I speak,

It’s because stories like mine

don’t get told

unless we tell them.

This is NF Awareness Month

And I am just one of the many voices.

Please pay attention.
