Welcome to Women in RARE: Next Gen. Here, we shine a spotlight on female rare disease advocates of the future. First featured in the Women in RARE edition of RARE Revolution Magazine

About you

I am a registered associate nutritionist and dance fitness instructor, healthy lifestyle blogger and public speaker. In 2020 I set up my own nutrition and wellbeing company called ‘Sorchas Healthy Living’, which is an online business where I offer nutrition consultations, free recipes, blogs and videos to help people live their healthiest lives. In my free time, I love to dance, listen to music, do yoga and read. I have a BSc in food science and nutrition and am currently doing my master’s in public health nutrition.

Your biggest motivation

I know from personal experience how important good nutrition is, even if you have a chronic illness. I want to share this with as many people as I can.

Your greatest achievement

Moving away from home to do my master’s in public health nutrition at UCD. It took a lot of fighting to get things set up so I could attend UCD safely, but thankfully it all paid off and I am there now, absolutely loving it.

What’s next to strive for?

To build my company and spread awareness about chronic illnesses and the importance of good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle.

Advice to other up-and-coming advocates

Go with your gut! It may not be right all the time but it may know where you need to be better than you do. I started off with the idea that I would just do online consultations and some in-person workshops and talks about nutrition and wellbeing. When the opportunity arose for me to get into public speaking, I was a bit weary, but it turned out to be something I enjoy!

The tide will have turned for the rare disease community when...

More people with rare diseases get more opportunities to take a more active part in society.
